WW2 German POW Alloy Work Box Trench Art Style.

An unusual and rare POW trade Trench Art Trinket Box. This has been made from Alloy usually from shot down aircraft in the style of the Italian POW’s. The interior of the lid is inscribed “Christmas 1946 3107 Ind. Germ Work Coy Almaza. The exterior of the box is decorated with a temple, South African Springbok, Sailing ship Lions and Africa Egypt. The interior with the original card lining. Raised on small bracket feet the handle to lift the lid in the form of an animal head. Overall GC. Size 5 x 3 1/2 x 3 inches.

In 1945/46 with the end of WW2 Egypt had large garrisons of Allied troops and some 1000,000 German POWs. Work Companies were formed from the German POW’s under the supervision of the Royal Pioneer Corps to undertake various jobs, Barrack construction, bomb disposal, etc. 3107 Coy is confirmed as been based at Almaza from the 27th October 1946 until December 25th 1946.
