WW1 Staffordshire Yeomanry Attributed Officer’s Cap.

A superb tailored example by Hawkes of Piccadilly worn by Major William Moat.
The cap is typical of the pre Great War style which was seen worn by Officer’s at beginning of the war and the Battle of Mons. Khaki cloth, tailored with Staffordshire Yeomanry mounted buttons which support the correct thin brown leather chinstrap. To the front an OSD regimental badge. The interior with leather sweatband and leather lining, the latter with gilt tooled tailors details and ink name W Moat. The name is repeated to the paper tailors order label under the sweatband. This cap is fitted with the rare feature of the original cotton field use cover (This has not been removed and remains in place as worn by the Major). One small area of moth near the badge, not effecting the appearance, otherwise an excellent example Very Good Condition

Major William Moat of Johnson Hall, Eccleshall served with the 6th Co. Imperial Yeomanry during the Boer War. In 1901 he was appointed an Honorary Lieutenant in the Staffordshire Yeomanry and in 1906 promoted to Major. In 1912 he was appointed High Sheriff of Staffordshire and at the outbreak of the Great War he retained his rank and Regiment to serve with the Stafford Territorial Force Association. During the inter war years he was appointed a Deputy County Lieutenant and is noted in 1941 as continuing to be linked to the Territorial Force Association.
