Corporal Adam Dunsmore held the technical rank of Chemist Corporal, he landed in France on the 26th July 1915 and is confirmed as serving with 189th Special Company in January 1916. The Special Companies of the Royal Engineers were formed to develop the British response to the German Gas attacks at Ypres, number 189 was formed in August 1915 with all of the men given the rank of Chemist Corporal.
