Warrant Officer Edward William Henry White was born in Reading he enlisted into the Devonshire Regiment at Exeter in 1890. The following year he saw service in Egypt and in India, he took part in the Tirah campaign and is entitled to the IGS with clasp (Medal absent from Group). He served in South Africa from October 1899 until 1903 and on completion of 21 years service was discharged in July 1911. At the outbreak of the Great War he volunteered his services once again to the Devonshire Regiment and rejoined in September 1914 being posted to the 8th Bn and in 1916 he was posted to the 44th Training Reserve Battalion. He was discharged in May 1918 and awarded the Silver War Badge. He did not serve overseas and no WW1 medals would have been issued. The presence of the Defence Medal would indicate Home Guard or Civil Defence service during WW2.
