WW1 Personalised Unit Marked Brodie Steel Helmet Royal Sussex Regiment.
This B pattern Brodie steel helmet retains original green painted finish and is emblazoned with a red diamond to one side. The lining and chinstrap are now absent. The original owner has scratched his name to the underside of the rim “SERGEANT C.F. WELLER”, also with the additional inscription “MISS WINNEFRED”. Despite the lining missing remains a good clean and interesting helmet.
The shape of the diamond and colour was used by the B Coy 1/5th Royal Sussex Regiment. It is interesting to note that I have only been able to track down two men by this name on the WW1 medal Cards, Royal Artillery and Royal Sussex Regiment, later Royal Engineers.
